Metal filter

Also known as metal mesh, mesh filter, mesh screen

What is metal filter in coffee?

A metal filter is a fine stainless-steel mesh that holds back coffee grounds, as used in a French press plunger and some reusable pour-over filters. Unlike paper, it lets natural coffee oils and some fine particles through, giving a fuller-bodied cup with a little sediment.

Because metal mesh lets oils through, metal-filtered coffee contains more cafestol than paper-filtered coffee. Clean the mesh regularly: trapped oils go rancid and spoil the taste.
