Machines, Pods & Commercial

From single-serve capsules to commercial vacuum-press brewers, these methods automate brewing for convenience and consistency. Each uses a different physical principle, such as pressure, centrifugal force or vacuum, so they are as interesting to understand as any manual method.

How do coffee pod machines work?

Coffee pod machines pierce a sealed capsule of pre-ground coffee and force hot water through it. Espresso-style systems such as Nespresso Original use pump pressure up to about 19 bar, while Nespresso Vertuo spins the capsule at high speed (centrifusion) to brew.
