Decanting

What is decanting in coffee?

Decanting means pouring brewed coffee off the grounds into a separate jug, flask or cup as soon as it is ready. In immersion brewers like the French press, coffee left sitting on the grounds keeps extracting and turns bitter, so decanting locks in the flavour you brewed.

Decanting matters most with a French press, where the plunger does not separate the coffee from the grounds completely. A pre-warmed jug or vacuum flask keeps decanted coffee hot without stewing it.
