Hario V60 Dripper
The Hario V60 cone dripper compared: sizes 01, 02 and 03, plastic, Tritan, ceramic, glass and metal versions, the new V60 NEO, and which one to buy.
Which Hario V60 should I buy?
For most people, a size 02 in plastic or Tritan, Hario's entry-level and crack-resistant versions. Choose the 01 for a single cup and the 03 for big batches; each takes its own filter papers. Ceramic, glass and stainless steel versions brew the same way. The V60 NEO, with redesigned ribs, is built for a faster, cleaner brew.
The Hario V60 is a cone-shaped pour-over dripper from Hario, the Japanese heatproof-glass company founded in 1921. Every V60 shares the same design, a 60° cone with spiral ribs and one large hole, but it comes in three sizes and half a dozen materials, and Hario now sells a redesigned NEO too. This page helps you pick one. For how to brew, see the V60 guide.
The short version
- Buy the 02 if you’re unsure; the 01 suits one cup, the 03 big batches.
- Plastic or Tritan makes a good first V60; Tritan resists cracking and is dishwasher safe.
- Ceramic, glass and stainless steel brew the same way and look smarter.
- Match your filters to the size: 01, 02 or 03.
- The V60 NEO has new ribs for a faster, cleaner brew.
What makes a V60 a V60?
Three features, Hario says:
- A cone, which makes a deeper bed of coffee than a flat-bottomed, trapezoid dripper, so the water stays in contact with the grounds longer.
- Spiral ribs, which stop the paper sticking to the wall, leaving room for air and for the coffee to expand.
- One large hole, which lets the tip of the paper poke through, so nothing restricts the flow; pour faster for a lighter cup, slower for a stronger one.
Hario’s designers revisited cone drippers in 2004, working with resin makers and potters in Arita, Hario UK’s history says. They wanted to recreate the taste of cloth-filtered coffee with paper, and the spiral ribs were the key.

Source: Hario UK. The V60 guide brews 15 g of coffee to 250 g of water in a 02, and up to 30 g to 500 g for three cups. An 01 Tritan V60 weighs about 130 g boxed and an 02 about 200 g.
Which V60 material is best?
They all brew good coffee. The differences are price, weight, looks and care:
| Material | What Hario says | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic | One of the most popular entry-level V60s, in clear, red and white | Comes with a measuring scoop and a how-to-brew guide |
| Tritan | BPA-free, glass-like clarity, less prone to cracking than ordinary resins, resists staining and smells | Dishwasher safe |
| Ceramic | Sold in many colours, including the 20th-anniversary Japan Collection | Check the box for dishwasher advice |
| Borosilicate glass | Heatproof glass, which Hario markets for heat retention | Sold with black, olive wood, walnut and other bases |
| Stainless steel | Uncoated steel with a silicone rubber holder | An Outdoor version is sold for camping; made in Japan |

What is the V60 NEO?
The V60 Dripper NEO is Hario’s rethink of the ribs. Instead of the classic spiral, it has 72 fine ribs that converge into 9 at the base. They press the paper more closely against the wall, so water flows down the whole surface rather than just the centre. Hario says this deliberately increases bypass, the water that runs past the coffee, giving a faster extraction and a clean cup with balanced acidity and sweetness. It comes in sizes 01 and 02, including transparent and amber versions.
What else do you need?
- Paper filters in the matching size.
- A gooseneck kettle, for a slow, steady pour.
- A coffee scale to weigh coffee and water.
- A burr grinder set to medium-fine.

Questions & answers
What size V60 should I get?
The 02 if you're unsure. Hario UK describes the 01 as perfect for one person and the 02 and 03 as brewing a little more. The 02 handles one mug up to a small pot, and each size takes its own size of filter paper.
Is a plastic V60 as good as ceramic?
For brewing, yes: every V60 has the same 60° cone, spiral ribs and single large hole, and the grind and your pouring matter as much as anything. The materials differ in price, looks and care: the Tritan version, for example, is dishwasher safe.
What is the V60 NEO?
A redesigned V60 with 72 fine ribs that merge into 9 at the base. They press the paper closer to the wall so more water flows down the sides, which Hario says gives a faster, cleaner brew with balanced acidity and sweetness.
When was the V60 invented?
Hario UK's history of the V60 says its designers invented it in 2004; a Hario UK product page for the 20th-anniversary Japan Collection says it was first released in 2005.
Is the V60 dishwasher safe?
The Tritan V60 is, Hario says. For other materials, check the box or the maker's product page before putting it in the dishwasher.
