How do you use a coffee bag?
Put the coffee bag in your mug and pour hot water over it, about 8 oz (227 ml) for a typical bag. Dunk it for 15 to 30 seconds to get it brewing, then leave it to steep for about 5 minutes, or as long as the pack says. Lift it out, squeeze gently if you like, and drink. For a stronger cup, steep longer or use less water.

Method
Bag in the mug
Put the coffee bag in your mug.
Pour
Gradually pour about 8 oz (227 ml) of hot water, about 90–96°C, over the bag, or the amount on the pack.
Dunk20 s
Dunk the bag up and down for 15 to 30 seconds, to wet all the coffee and get it brewing.
Steep5:00
Leave the bag in to steep for about 5 minutes, or as long as the pack says. Longer makes it stronger.
Lift out and drink
Lift the bag out, let it drip, and drink it as it is or with milk.
Coffee bags are ground coffee sealed in a filter bag that you steep in your mug, just like a tea bag. Pour hot water over it, dunk it, leave it to steep, lift it out. There’s no equipment and no grounds to clear up, and because it’s real ground coffee steeping in water, it’s a tiny version of a French press rather than instant. Here’s how to get a good cup from one.
The short version
- Real ground coffee in a bag, steeped in the mug like tea.
- About 8 oz (227 ml) of hot water, at about 90–96°C, for a typical bag.
- Dunk for 15 to 30 seconds, then steep for about 5 minutes.
- Stronger? Steep longer or use less water.
- No equipment, ideal for work, travel and camping.
How do coffee bags work?
A coffee bag is a sealed filter filled with ground coffee. In hot water, the coffee steeps, just as it would in a French press, and the bag acts as the filter, holding the grounds back. Because the coffee is fully immersed for several minutes, the steep time and the amount of water decide the strength.
How do you use a coffee bag, step by step?
These steps follow Steeped Coffee’s instructions, which are typical:
- Put the bag in your mug.
- Gradually pour about 8 oz (227 ml) of hot water, about 90–96°C (195–205°F), over it, or the amount on the pack.
- Dunk it for 15 to 30 seconds, to wet all the coffee.
- Steep for about 5 minutes, or as the pack says. You can leave it in longer.
- Lift it out, let it drip, and drink.
Brew mode on this page times the dunk and steep for you.
How long should you steep a coffee bag?
About 5 minutes for most bags, but always check the pack. Steeped Coffee says 5 minutes or more, and Coffee Detective’s reviewer preferred closer to 5 minutes than 4. Taste it and adjust.
How do I make it stronger?
- Steep longer. A bag in the cup for 7 or 8 minutes is noticeably stronger.
- Use less water, or a smaller mug.
- Dunk more, especially at the start, so all the coffee gets wet.
- Use hot water, just off the boil, not tepid.

Where are coffee bags from?
Coffee bags modelled on tea bags have been sold for decades. Wikipedia describes the older kind as a mix of instant and finely ground coffee in a gauze bag, steeped for about three minutes. They’ve had a revival with specialty roasters: Steeped Coffee in the US sells single-serve bags of ground specialty coffee, which it describes as nitro sealed, with a compostable inner bag and outer pack.
Do coffee bags taste as good as fresh brewed?
They’re convenient rather than perfect. The coffee was ground before it was packed, so it can’t be as fresh as coffee you grind yourself, and you can’t adjust the grind. Compared with instant, though, it’s real brewed coffee.
General guidance only. Take care with hot water, and check the pack for how to dispose of or compost the bag.
Coffee bags vs other methods
- French press: the same steeping, at full size, with a grinder.
- Drip bag: a single-serve pour-over that hangs on your cup.
- Clever Dripper: steeping with a paper filter, for a cleaner cup.
- Cupping: the steeped tasting method used by the coffee trade.

Words in this guide
- Steeping
- Steeping is leaving ground coffee to sit in water so its flavour dissolves out, as in a French press or cold brew.
- Total dissolved solids (TDS)
- Total dissolved solids (TDS) measures how much coffee is dissolved in the cup, shown as a percentage.
- Pour-over
- Pour-over is a way of making filter coffee by hand: you pour hot water over ground coffee in a filter cone and let it drip through into a cup or jug.
- Specialty coffee
- Specialty coffee is high-quality coffee graded at 80 points or more out of 100 by trained tasters using the Specialty Coffee Association's scoring system.
- Nitro coffee
- Nitro coffee is cold brew infused with nitrogen gas and poured from a tap, much like a stout beer.
- Immersion vs percolation
- Immersion brewing steeps all the coffee in all the water at once, as a French press does.
Questions & answers
How long should you steep a coffee bag?
About 5 minutes for most bags. Steeped Coffee says to dunk its bags for 15 to 30 seconds, then brew for 5 minutes or more. Always check the pack, as the right time depends on the bag.
How do you make coffee from a bag stronger?
Steep it longer, dunk it a little more, or use less water. Steeped Coffee says to dunk for 15 to 30 seconds, or longer for added strength.
Is a coffee bag the same as instant coffee?
No. A coffee bag holds real ground coffee that you brew in hot water, like a very small French press. Instant coffee is coffee that has already been brewed and dried, so it dissolves.
What's the difference between a coffee bag and a drip bag?
A coffee bag sits in the cup and steeps, like a tea bag. A drip bag hangs on the rim of the cup and you pour water through it, like a tiny pour-over.
Can you reuse a coffee bag?
You can, but the second cup will be much weaker, because most of the flavour comes out the first time.
