How do you use a Bialetti Venus?

To use a Bialetti Venus, fill the base with water to just below the safety valve, fill the funnel with ground coffee without tamping it, screw the pot together and put it on the heat. It takes about 4–6 minutes. When it starts to gurgle, take it off, stir the coffee in the top and pour. The 4, 6 and 10-cup sizes work on induction.

Method

  1. Fill the base with water

Fill the bottom chamber with water up to just below the safety valve. Never fill above the valve.

  2. Fill the funnel with coffee

Put the funnel in the base and fill it with ground coffee. Don't tamp or press it down, and wipe any grounds off the rim.

  3. Screw it together

Screw the top on firmly so the two halves seal.

  4. Heat it5:00

Put the Venus on the hob. On induction, use the 4, 6 or 10-cup size on a zone that suits its base. Brewing takes about 4–6 minutes.

  5. Take it off at the gurgle

When you hear it gurgle, the brew is done. Take it off the heat.

  6. Stir and pour

Stir the coffee in the top chamber before pouring, so every cup tastes the same.

  7. Clean it gently

Rinse it and clean it with a soft brush. Avoid the dishwasher and wire or abrasive brushes, which spoil the finish.

Bialetti Venus

Fill the base with water

Fill the bottom chamber with water up to just below the safety valve. Never fill above the valve.

The Bialetti Venus is a stainless steel moka pot from the Italian company Bialetti. It brews exactly like the classic aluminium Moka Express, using steam pressure to push hot water up through ground coffee into the top chamber, but it’s made of 18/10 stainless steel and, in its 4, 6 and 10-cup sizes, works on induction hobs. Here’s how to use one, which size to choose and how to look after it.

The short version

  • Water to just below the safety valve. Never above it.
  • Ground coffee in the funnel, loose. Don’t tamp it.
  • Heat it for about 4–6 minutes, until it gurgles.
  • Stir the coffee in the top, then pour.
  • Induction: the 4, 6 and 10-cup work on induction; the 2-cup doesn’t.

How is the Venus different from the Moka Express?

The way it brews is the same. The differences are the material and where you can use it.

Bialetti Venus Bialetti Moka Express
Material 18/10 stainless steel Aluminium
Induction 4, 6 and 10-cup: yes. 2-cup: no No, without an adapter plate
Inside the base Unpolished, sandblasted stainless steel, no coating Aluminium
Sizes 2, 4, 6 and 10-cup From 1-cup upwards
How to brew Water below the valve, loose coffee, heat The same

If you cook on induction, or simply prefer stainless steel to aluminium, the Venus is the Bialetti to look at. For more on the brewing itself, see the full moka pot guide.

What sizes does the Bialetti Venus come in?

Bialetti counts a “cup” as a small espresso cup of about 30 ml, not a mug. These are Bialetti’s figures:

Size Coffee made (approx.) Height × base width Induction
2-cup 85 ml 14.0 × 8.0 cm No
4-cup 170 ml 17.0 × 9.5 cm Yes
6-cup 235 ml 20.0 × 10.5 cm Yes

The Venus range to scale. A red line under the base marks the sizes that work on induction.

On induction, Bialetti advises checking your hob’s instructions to make sure the pot’s base suits the size of your induction zone.

What grind size should I use?

Use coffee ground for moka pots, the same as for any Bialetti stovetop pot.

How do you use a Bialetti Venus, step by step?

  1. Fill the base with water to just below the safety valve, never above it.
  2. Fill the funnel with ground coffee. Don’t tamp or press it, and wipe the rim clean.
  3. Screw the top on firmly.
  4. Put it on the heat. On induction, use a 4, 6 or 10-cup Venus on a suitable zone.
  5. Wait about 4–6 minutes. When you hear it gurgle, it’s done: take it off the heat.
  6. Stir the coffee in the top chamber, then pour.

Why isn’t my Venus working properly?

Problem Likely cause Fix
It won’t heat on induction It’s the 2-cup, which isn’t induction-compatible Use it on gas, electric or ceramic, or choose a 4, 6 or 10-cup for induction
Induction hob doesn’t detect it Base doesn’t suit the zone size Check your hob’s instructions and use a zone that suits the base
Steam or water from the safety valve Water above the valve, or coffee packed down Fill to just below the valve and leave the coffee loose
Leaks around the middle Grounds on the rim, or not screwed tight Wipe the rim and screw the top on firmly
The finish looks dull or scratched Dishwasher, or wire or abrasive brushes Clean with a soft brush and a rinse

How do you clean a Bialetti Venus?

Rinse it and clean it with a soft brush. Bialetti advises avoiding the dishwasher and wire or abrasive brushes, to keep the finish looking good. Make sure the funnel rim is free of grounds before you use it again so the pot seals properly. (Some retailers list the Venus as dishwasher safe, but Bialetti’s own care advice is to avoid it.)

General guidance only. Always follow the instructions that come with your pot.

Which Venus size should I buy?

  • 2-cup: about 85 ml of coffee. Not for induction.
  • 4-cup: about 170 ml. The smallest Venus that works on induction.
  • 6-cup: about 235 ml.
  • 10-cup: about 460 ml.

A moka pot is designed to be used full, so choose the size that matches how much coffee you make. If you cook on induction, start at the 4-cup. Bialetti also makes the Moka Induction, which pairs a classic-style top with an induction base. More on choosing a pot in the moka pot kit guide.

Questions & answers

Does the Bialetti Venus work on induction?

The 4, 6 and 10-cup Venus work on induction hobs; the 2-cup does not. Bialetti also advises checking your hob's instructions to make sure the pot's base suits the size of your induction zone.

What sizes does the Bialetti Venus come in?

The Venus comes in 2, 4, 6 and 10-cup sizes, making about 85 ml, 170 ml, 235 ml and 460 ml of coffee. Bialetti counts a "cup" as a small espresso cup of about 30 ml, not a mug.

What is the Bialetti Venus made of?

The Venus is made of food-grade 18/10 stainless steel, inside and out. Unlike the classic aluminium Moka Express, its bottom chamber is unpolished, sandblasted stainless steel with no coating.

What's the difference between the Bialetti Venus and the Moka Express?

The Moka Express is aluminium and won't work on induction without an adapter plate. The Venus is 18/10 stainless steel, and its 4, 6 and 10-cup sizes work directly on induction. Both brew the same way, with water below the valve and loose, untamped coffee in the funnel.

Can you put a Bialetti Venus in the dishwasher?

Bialetti advises against it. Clean the Venus with a soft brush and a rinse, and avoid the dishwasher and wire or abrasive brushes, which spoil the finish. Some retailers list it as dishwasher safe, so if in doubt, follow the instructions that came with your pot.

How long does a Bialetti Venus take to brew?

About 4–6 minutes. When you hear the gurgle, the brew is finished; take it off the heat, stir the coffee in the top chamber and pour.

Do you tamp coffee in a Bialetti Venus?

No. Fill the funnel with ground coffee and leave it loose. Fill the water to just below the safety valve, never above it.
