Fill the base with water

Fill the base with water to indicator level 1 if you're using a gas hob, or level 2 if you're using an electric hob.

The Bialetti Mukka Express is a stovetop pot from the Italian company Bialetti that makes a milky coffee, a cappuccino or a caffè latte, in one go on the hob. It’s built like a moka pot, with water in the base and coffee in a funnel, but the top chamber holds cold milk. As it heats, the coffee is pushed through a pressure valve into the milk, mixing in and frothing it at the same time. Its name plays on “moka” and mucca, the Italian for cow, which is why it’s best known in black-and-white cow print. Here’s how to use it, step by step.

The short version

  • Water in the base: to level 1 for gas, level 2 for an electric hob.
  • Coffee in the funnel, loose. Never press it down, and keep the rim clean.
  • Cold milk in the top chamber, up to its mark.
  • Lid button pressed for cappuccino, left up for caffè latte.
  • Heat with the lid closed: about 3–4 minutes on gas, 5–10 minutes on electric.

How does the Mukka Express work?

A normal moka pot pushes coffee up into an empty top chamber. The Mukka Express sends it into milk instead. Steam pressure in the base pushes hot water up through the coffee, and the brewed coffee comes out of a pressure valve on the column straight into the cold milk in the top. That jet mixes the coffee into the milk and froths it, so you end up with a finished milky drink rather than coffee you then have to add milk to.

What do you need?

You’ll need Notes
A Bialetti Mukka Express Stovetop pot with water marks in the base and a milk mark in the top
Ground coffee Coffee ground for moka pots
Cold milk Poured into the top chamber, up to the mark
A hob Gas or electric; the water level differs for each

How do you use a Mukka Express, step by step?

  1. Fill the base with water. To indicator level 1 on gas, or level 2 on an electric hob.
  2. Fill the funnel with ground coffee. Don’t press it down. Wipe any coffee off the edges, because grounds on the rim stop the pot from closing properly.
  3. Screw it together and check that the pressure valve has clicked securely into place.
  4. Pour cold milk into the top chamber, up to its indicator.
  5. Choose your drink. Press the lid button for a cappuccino; leave it up for a caffè latte.
  6. Heat it with the lid closed. On gas, use a medium flame that stays under the pot rather than reaching up the sides. Keep the lid closed the whole time it’s on the heat, so you’re not in the way of hot liquid.
  7. Give it time: about 3–4 minutes on gas and 5–10 minutes on an electric hob.
  8. Serve once it’s finished brewing.

Why isn’t my Mukka Express working properly?

Problem Likely cause Fix
The pot won’t close properly Coffee grounds on the rim Wipe the edges of the funnel and base clean before screwing it together
The drink doesn’t come through Pressure valve not seated Check the valve has clicked securely into place before heating
Hot liquid escapes from the top Lid open during heating Keep the lid closed while it’s on the heat
Flame scorching the sides Flame too big on gas Use a medium flame that stays under the pot
Takes much longer than expected Electric hob Allow 5–10 minutes on electric, compared with 3–4 on gas

Common Mukka Express mistakes

  • Pressing the coffee down. Fill the funnel and leave it loose.
  • Using the wrong water mark. Level 1 is for gas, level 2 for electric.
  • Opening the lid while it’s heating. Keep it closed until it’s done.
  • A flame up the sides. Keep a gas flame under the base.
  • Putting it in the dishwasher. Rinse it by hand once it has cooled.

Mukka Express models

  • The stovetop Mukka Express on this page, with its lid button for cappuccino or latte.
  • Bialetti Mukka Express Electric. Bialetti also made an electric version that heats on its own base, with a weighted valve on the column instead of a lid button: push it down for foam, or leave it up for a latte.

How do you clean a Mukka Express?

Wait until the pot has cooled down before cleaning it. Rinse the parts by hand, and don’t put it in the dishwasher. Make sure the funnel rim and the valve are free of coffee grounds before you use it again.

General guidance only. Always follow the instructions that come with your pot.

Mukka Express vs other methods

  • Moka pot (Moka Express): the original Bialetti pot, which makes strong black coffee; you add milk separately.
  • Bialetti Brikka: a moka pot with a pressure valve for a foamier black coffee, with no milk chamber.
  • Espresso: a machine-made shot; a cappuccino then needs the milk steamed separately.
  • French press: makes coffee by steeping, and can also froth warm milk if you pump the plunger.

What you’ll need

Words in this guide

Steeping
Steeping is leaving ground coffee to sit in water so its flavour dissolves out, as in a French press or cold brew.

Questions & answers

What is a Bialetti Mukka Express?

The Mukka Express is a stovetop pot from Bialetti that makes a milky coffee, such as a cappuccino or caffè latte, in one go. It works like a moka pot, with water in the base and coffee in a funnel, but the top chamber holds cold milk, and the brewed coffee passes through a pressure valve into the milk, frothing it as it goes.

How does the Mukka Express make a cappuccino?

You put cold milk in the top chamber and press the button on the lid. As the pot heats, steam pressure pushes water up through the coffee and out through a pressure valve into the milk, which mixes the coffee in and froths the milk at the same time. Leave the lid button up instead for a caffè latte.

How much water goes in a Mukka Express?

The base has two marks. Fill to indicator level 1 if you're cooking on gas, or to level 2 if you're using an electric hob. The milk goes in the top chamber, up to its own indicator mark. Always follow the marks on your own pot.

Should you press the coffee down in a Mukka Express?

No. Fill the funnel with ground coffee and leave it loose, without pressing or tamping. Wipe any coffee off the edges of the funnel and the base too, because grounds on the rim stop the pot closing properly.

How long does a Mukka Express take?

About 3–4 minutes on a gas hob and 5–10 minutes on an electric hob. Use a medium flame on gas, keeping it under the pot so it doesn't reach the sides, and keep the lid closed while it's on the heat.

Can you put a Mukka Express in the dishwasher?

No. The Mukka Express instructions say not to put the Mukka Express in the dishwasher. Wait until it has cooled down, then rinse it by hand.

Why is it called the Mukka?

The name is a play on "moka" and the Italian word "mucca", meaning cow. That's why the Mukka Express is famous for its black-and-white cow-print design.

Is there an electric Mukka Express?

Yes. Bialetti also made an electric version that heats on its own base. Its weighted valve on the column sets the drink instead of a lid button. Push it down for foam, or leave it up for a latte.
