Sơn La, in the mountains of Vietnam’s north-west, is a long way from the robusta plantations of the Central Highlands, in every sense. It grows arabica, and more of it than anywhere else in Vietnam: 47.9% of the country’s arabica land, Tạp chí Kinh tế Tài chính reports. Coffee grows on slopes and hillsides at about 900–1,200 metres, and since 2017 it has been a protected origin, Cà phê Sơn La.

  • Fruit and herbs, bright acidity and a long, sweet finish.
  • About 37,700 tonnes in 2025.

What does Sơn La coffee taste like?

There’s no official national cup profile, but the province’s best-known producer gives a clear picture. The Bích Thao co-operative, whose coffee was the first in Sơn La to win a national five-star OCOP rating, describes:

  • aroma of fruit and herbs;
  • bright acidity mixed with light bitterness;
  • a long, gentle, sweet finish.

Nhân Dân credits the growing conditions: coffee on slopes at the foot of low mountains and on hillsides, at 900 to 1,200 metres. It’s more modest about the national picture: experts rate most Vietnamese arabica as “quite good” rather than outstanding, with the best lots at 85–86 points.

How much coffee does Sơn La grow?

The sources differ on the area, probably because some count only arabica:

It goes to China, the United States, Canada and the EU, according to Báo Văn hóa, and the province is building farms to Rainforest Alliance, UTZ and 4C standards, Nhân Dân reports.

Sơn La’s protected name

Cà phê Sơn La has been protected as a geographical indication by Vietnam’s intellectual property office since 2017, Báo Văn hóa reports. By late 2025, seven organisations in the province had been licensed to use it, according to Tạp chí Kinh tế Tài chính; Báo Văn hóa counts eight.
