Where and how is it grown?
The West Valley “contains a multitude of microclimates”, the importer Royal New York says; its coffee is mainly strictly hard bean, grown high, and high-quality microlots, from farms that average about 3 hectares. San Roque, named in many of its Cup of Excellence lots, is listed by the competition as a Typica-line variety. Costa Rica’s harvest is concentrated from November to February, USDA says, starting as early as August in the low south and ending as late as May in the highest areas.
