Materials

Ceramic, glass, copper, steel, paper, cloth and metal filters: how materials change heat and flavour.

Does the material of a coffee brewer change the taste?

The filter changes it most: paper holds back oils and cafestol, while metal lets them through. A dripper’s material matters far less; side-by-side tests found plastic V60s ran only a few degrees warmer than ceramic. Copper pots heat fastest but should be lined, because coffee is acidic.

  1. Ceramic vs Glass vs Plastic Brewers

For heat, plastic is slightly ahead: it conducts heat poorly and weighs little, so it takes the least warmth from the brew.
  2. Copper and Brass in Coffee Pots

    Yes, if it's lined.
  3. Paper vs Cloth vs Metal Filters

    It depends what you want.
