> With the plunger pushed fully in, flip the Delter, add about 12 g of coffee and screw on the cap with a rinsed filter. Stand it on your cup and fill to the 200 ml line. Raise the plunger to the 50 ml mark and press to pre-infuse, wait about 30 seconds, then raise it and press the rest through. It takes about 2 to 3 minutes.

## At a glance

- Ratio: 1:16.7 (12 g coffee : 200 g water)
- Grind: Medium-coarse
- Brew time: about 2:30
- Category: Hybrid & Air-pressure (Hybrid)
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Origin: Australia, 2019
- Also known as: DCP, Delter press, Delter injection brewer

## Steps

1. **Rinse the filter**: Fit a paper filter in the cap and rinse it with hot water. Check the plunger is pushed fully down into the brewer.
2. **Add the coffee**: Turn the Delter upside down so the small brew chamber faces up, add about 12 g of coffee and screw the cap on.
3. **Flip and fill**: Stand it the right way up on your cup and pour hot water through the plunger to the 200 ml line. The Jet-Seal keeps the water off the coffee for now.
4. **Pre-infuse**: Raise the plunger to the 50 ml mark, then press it down to push that water into the coffee. Wait about 30 seconds.
5. **Press the rest**: Raise the plunger again and press the rest of the water through, in one or more presses. Expect about 2 to 3 minutes in total.

The **Delter Coffee Press** is a small hand-pressed brewer from **Australia** that looks a little like an [AeroPress](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/aeropress/) but works in a different way. A **Jet-Seal** keeps the water and coffee **apart** until you press. Each press then **injects** a little water through the coffee and out through a paper filter, so the coffee is never left steeping. Brewers call this **injection brewing**, and it behaves more like a pour-over than an immersion brewer. It was designed by **Mark Folker** and launched in **2019**. Here's how to use one.

## The short version

- **A hand-pressed brewer** with a seal that keeps water and coffee apart.
- **Injection brewing**: you press water through the coffee in stages.
- **About 12 g of coffee to 200 ml of water.**
- **Pre-infuse with 50 ml, wait about 30 seconds, then press the rest through.**
- **About 2 to 3 minutes**, start to finish.

## How does the Delter work?

In an AeroPress, the coffee and water sit together and **steep** before you press. In the Delter, the plunger starts fully pushed in, and you pour the water in through it. When you raise the plunger, water passes through slots in its walls and rests on the **Jet-Seal**, above the coffee. When you press, that water is pushed through the seal's **21 tiny holes** as a jet, into the coffee, through the filter and into your cup. Because you raise the plunger to a marked line, you can measure each dose of water, such as 50 ml to pre-infuse. Because the water is only in contact with the coffee briefly before it leaves, it works by **percolation**, like a [pour-over](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/v60/), rather than [immersion](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/french-press/). That means **less uncontrolled agitation**, and a lighter, cleaner cup.

## How much coffee and water should I use?

| | Delter's guide | Grouch & Co | Coffee Chronicler |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Coffee | 12 g | 14 g | 14 g |
| Water | 200 ml, to the line | 200 ml | 220 g |
| Grind | Not stated | Medium-coarse, like table salt | Not stated |
| Presses | 50 ml pre-infusion, then the rest | Not stated | 50 g hard press, wait 45 s; 100 g medium press; 70 g soft press |
| Time | About 2 to 3 minutes | About 2 minutes | 2:15 |

The Delter holds up to **450 ml of water and 28 g of coffee**. Because you can refill it, Delter says you can brew **24 g of coffee with 400 ml of water** in a single extraction. Colonna lists the included 6 g doser for 12 g to 200 ml, 18 g to 300 ml and 24 g to 400 ml. Coffee Chronicler found some brews thin until it used a harder pre-infusion.

## What grind size should I use?

Grouch & Co suggests **medium-coarse**, roughly like table salt. Adjust by taste: it suggests grinding slightly coarser if the coffee is bitter or slow, and slightly finer if it tastes thin or sharp.

## How do you use a Delter, step by step?

1. **Fit and rinse a paper filter** in the cap, with the plunger pushed fully in.
2. **Turn the Delter upside down**, add about 12 g of coffee and screw the cap on.
3. **Stand it on your cup** and pour hot water through the plunger to the 200 ml line.
4. **Raise the plunger to the 50 ml mark** and press it down to pre-infuse.
5. **Wait about 30 seconds.**
6. **Raise the plunger and press the rest through.**

Prima's version pours 210 g, waits a full minute after the 50 ml pre-infusion, then presses in two more stages (to the 125 ml and then the 35 ml mark), finishing around three minutes. Brew mode on this page times the pause and the pressing for you.

## Delter vs AeroPress

| | Delter Coffee Press | [AeroPress](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/aeropress/) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| How it brews | Injection: water pushed through in stages | Steep, then press |
| Water and coffee | Kept apart until you press | Together from the start |
| Filter | Paper | Paper or metal |
| Cup | Light, clean | Clean, fuller |

## Who makes the Delter?

The Delter was designed by **Mark Folker**, who previously designed the **Trinity One** brewer. Its Kickstarter campaign was fully funded by December 2018, pre-orders began shipping in February 2019, and it made its public debut at the **Melbourne International Coffee Expo in 2019**. Sources disagree on where the company is based: one names Brisbane, another Melbourne.

## How do you clean it?

Unscrew the cap, throw away the filter and grounds, and rinse the body, cap and plunger.

*General guidance only. Take care with hot water, keep the brewer on a sturdy cup, and press slowly rather than forcing it.*

## Delter vs other methods

- **[AeroPress](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/aeropress/):** the steep-and-press brewer it's most compared with.
- **[Fellow Prismo](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/fellow-prismo/):** an AeroPress cap for strong, espresso-style shots.
- **[NextLevel Pulsar](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/nextlevel-pulsar/):** a dripper that also keeps water from bypassing the coffee.
- **[V60](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/v60/):** the classic percolation brewer.

## Words used in this guide

- [Steeping](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/steeping/): Steeping is leaving ground coffee to sit in water so its flavour dissolves out, as in a French press or cold brew.
- [Pour-over](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/pour-over/): Pour-over is a way of making filter coffee by hand: you pour hot water over ground coffee in a filter cone and let it drip through into a cup or jug.
- [Immersion vs percolation](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/immersion-vs-percolation/): Immersion brewing steeps all the coffee in all the water at once, as a French press does.
- [Agitation](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/agitation/): Agitation is any movement of the coffee and water during brewing, such as stirring, swirling or a turbulent pour.
- [Bloom](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/bloom/): The bloom is the first small pour of water in a brew, usually 2–3 times the weight of the coffee, followed by a 30–45 second pause.
- [Extraction](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/extraction/): Extraction is the process of water dissolving flavour compounds out of ground coffee.
- [Body](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/body/): Body is how heavy and textured coffee feels in your mouth, from light and tea-like to thick and syrupy.
- [Bypass](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/bypass/): Bypass is brew water that flows around the coffee bed instead of through it, for example down the sides of a filter, so it reaches the cup without extracting much flavour.

## FAQs

### How does the Delter Coffee Press work?

Its Jet-Seal keeps the water and the coffee apart until you press. Each press injects a little water through the coffee and out through the filter, so the coffee isn't left steeping. Brewers call this injection brewing.

### Delter vs AeroPress?

Both are small, plastic, hand-pressed brewers that use paper filters. The AeroPress steeps the coffee in the water before you press; the Delter keeps them apart and pushes water through the coffee in stages, so it works more like percolation.

### How much coffee goes in a Delter?

Delter's brewing guide, as published by retailers such as Caffeine Lab, uses a 12 g serve with 200 ml of water, and the included doser makes it easy to scale (12 g to 200 ml, 24 g to 400 ml). Grouch & Co suggests 14 g, ground medium-coarse. It holds up to 450 ml of water and 28 g of coffee.

### Who designed the Delter?

Mark Folker, an Australian designer who previously designed the Trinity One brewer. The Delter made its public debut at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo in 2019.

### How long does a Delter brew take?

About 2 to 3 minutes. Grouch & Co aims for about two minutes; Delter told Daily Coffee News that a 400 ml brew takes around 2:30; Prima's recipe finishes around three minutes.
