> The AeroPress XL is the largest AeroPress, launched in June 2023 with twice the capacity of the Original, enough for 2–4 cups at once. It brews the same way and comes with its own Tritan carafe, a scoop and XL-size paper filters. Standard AeroPress filters and the standard Flow Control cap don't fit; it has its own XL versions.

## At a glance

- Grind: Medium-fine (table salt)
- Category: Hybrid & Air-pressure (Hybrid)
- Difficulty: Beginner
- Origin: United States, 2023
- Also known as: large AeroPress, AeroPress XL coffee maker, big AeroPress

## Steps

1. **Fit an XL filter**: Put an XL paper filter in the filter cap and screw it onto the chamber. Standard AeroPress filters are too small.
2. **Stand it on the carafe**: Stand the XL on the Tritan carafe that comes with it, or on a large, sturdy mug.
3. **Add the coffee**: Measure the coffee with the scoop that comes with the XL and add it to the chamber.
4. **Add water and stir**: Pour in hot water to the marks on the chamber and stir with the stirrer.
5. **Press**: Put the plunger in and press down slowly and steadily.
6. **Serve**: Pour from the carafe into cups, topping up with hot water if you like a longer coffee.
7. **Clean it**: Push out the used coffee and XL filter, then rinse the parts.

The **AeroPress XL** is the largest member of the [AeroPress](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/aeropress/) family. AeroPress, Inc. launched it in **June 2023** with **twice the capacity of the Original**, enough for **2–4 cups** at once. It brews exactly the same way, steeping the coffee and pressing it through a filter, and it comes with its own **Tritan carafe** to brew into. Here's how to use it, which filters it needs and how it compares with the rest of the range.

## The short version

- **The biggest AeroPress:** brews **2–4 cups** at once, twice the capacity of the Original.
- **Launched in June 2023.**
- **Comes with a Tritan carafe**, a scoop, a stirrer and XL-size paper filters.
- **Needs XL filters.** Standard AeroPress filters are too small.
- **The standard Flow Control cap doesn't fit**; there's a separate XL version.

## How is the AeroPress XL different?

The brewing is the same as every AeroPress. What changes is the size, and the things that come with it:

| | AeroPress XL | AeroPress Original |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Brewing | Steep and press through a filter | The same |
| Capacity | 2–4 cups, twice the Original | Half the XL's capacity |
| Carafe | Tritan carafe included | No carafe |
| Filters | XL-size paper filters | Standard AeroPress filters |
| Scoop | Included | Included |
| Flow Control cap | Needs the separate Variable Flow Control Filter Cap XL | Fits the standard cap |

## What comes in the box?

According to AeroPress and its retailers, the XL comes with:

- **The chamber, plunger and filter cap**, in XL size
- **A multi-serve carafe** made of clear, shatterproof Tritan
- **XL-size paper micro-filters**
- **A stirrer**
- **A scoop** for measuring the coffee

The number of filters in the box can differ between retailers, so check the listing if it matters.

## Can I use a Flow Control cap on the AeroPress XL?

Not the standard one: AeroPress says the [Flow Control filter cap](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/aeropress-flow-control/) fits the Original, Go and Clear, but not the XL. For the XL there's a separate **Variable Flow Control Filter Cap XL**, which uses an open and close tab to stop the coffee dripping through while it steeps.

## Which filters does the AeroPress XL use?

The XL needs **its own, larger XL paper filters**. Filters made for the AeroPress Original, Clear and Go are slightly smaller and won't fit. Keep a spare pack of XL filters, because you can't borrow from another AeroPress.

## What grind size should I use?

Around **medium-fine**, the same as any AeroPress. Grind finer if it's sour and thin, coarser if it's bitter or hard to press.

## How do you use the AeroPress XL, step by step?

1. **Fit an XL paper filter** in the cap and screw it onto the chamber.
2. **Stand it on the carafe** that comes with it.
3. **Add the coffee**, measured with the scoop.
4. **Pour in hot water** to the marks on the chamber and stir.
5. **Press slowly and steadily.** There's more coffee to push through than in the Original, so take your time.
6. **Pour from the carafe** into cups, topping up with hot water if you like.

For recipes and technique, see the main [AeroPress guide](https://dailyextraction.com/methods/aeropress/).

## How do you clean the AeroPress XL?

Unscrew the filter cap over the bin and push the plunger through to pop out the used coffee and XL filter, then rinse the chamber, plunger, cap and carafe.

*General guidance only. Always follow the instructions that come with your AeroPress.*

## Words used in this guide

- [Steeping](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/steeping/): Steeping is leaving ground coffee to sit in water so its flavour dissolves out, as in a French press or cold brew.
- [Body](https://dailyextraction.com/glossary/body/): Body is how heavy and textured coffee feels in your mouth, from light and tea-like to thick and syrupy.
